Terence Frederick "Terry" Venables (6 January 1943 – 25 November 2023) was an English football player and manager. He played for various clubs, including Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur and Queens Park Rangers, and gained two caps for England. He is best known for his managerial career, which included spells at Crystal Palace, Queens Park Rangers, Barcelona, Tottenham Hotspur, the England national team, Portsmouth and Crystal Palace again. He led Tottenham to the FA Cup title in 1981 and Barcelona to La Liga title in 1985. He also led England to the semi-finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup and the 1996 UEFA European Championship.

Early Life and Playing Career

Born in Dagenham, Essex, Venables began his playing career with Chelsea in 1960. He made over 200 appearances for the club, and was a member of the team that won the FA Cup in 1967. In 1969, he joined Tottenham Hotspur, where he spent four years. He then moved to Queens Park Rangers, where he remained until 1974. He also had a brief spell with Crystal Palace in 1974. Venables was capped twice by England in 1964.

Coaching Career

Venables began his coaching career with Crystal Palace in 1976. He led the club to promotion to the First Division in 1978, and then to the FA Cup semi-finals in 1979. In 1980, he joined Queens Park Rangers, where he remained for two years. He then moved to Barcelona, where he led the club to the La Liga title in 1985. In 1986, he returned to England to join Tottenham Hotspur. He led the club to the FA Cup title in 1981, and to the UEFA Cup final in 1984.

England National Team

In 1990, Venables was appointed manager of the England national team. He led the team to the semi-finals of the 1990 FIFA World Cup, and to the 1996 UEFA European Championship. He resigned as manager in 1996, after England was eliminated from the European Championship in the semi-finals.


Later Career

After leaving the England national team, Venables had spells as manager of Portsmouth and Crystal Palace. He retired from management in 2001.
