Andre Nolan Dawson (born July 10, 1954), nicknamed "the Hawk" and "Awesome Dawson", is an American former professional baseball player and inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame. He played 21 seasons in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Montreal Expos (1976–1986), Chicago Cubs (1987–1992), Boston Red Sox (1993–1995), and Florida Marlins (1996). Dawson was an eight-time All-Star and won the National League (NL) Rookie of the Year Award in 1977. He also won the NL Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award in 1987.
Dawson was known for his powerful swing and his ability to hit for average, power, and speed. He is one of only eight players in MLB history to have at least 400 home runs, 300 stolen bases, and 2,500 hits. He is also one of only two players to have at least 400 home runs, 1,500 RBI, and 300 stolen bases.
Dawson was born in Miami, Florida, and grew up playing baseball in the streets. He was drafted by the Expos in the 11th round of the 1975 MLB draft. He made his MLB debut with the Expos in 1976 and quickly established himself as one of the best young players in the league. He won the NL Rookie of the Year Award in 1977 after hitting 28 home runs and driving in 87 runs.
Dawson continued to be a productive player for the Expos throughout the 1970s and early 1980s. He was a key member of the Expos' 1981 team that won the NL East division title. In 1987, Dawson was traded to the Cubs. He had a career year with the Cubs, hitting 49 home runs and driving in 143 runs. He also won the NL MVP Award that season.
Dawson continued to play well for the Cubs and Red Sox in the early 1990s. He was traded to the Marlins in 1996 and finished his career with the Marlins in 1997.
Dawson was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2010. He is the only player to have his number retired by three different MLB teams: the Expos, Cubs, and Red Sox.
