Fire ferry carrying hundreds of people on the Baltic Sea

The Lithuanian military confirmed a ferry, carrying at least 335 people, caught fire on the Baltic Sea but the fire was contained.
Andrey Permyakov, head of Russia's maritime rescue service, confirmed that the fire had been successfully controlled. No casualties have been reported.

Passengers were taken to a safe area on the ferry. However, the ferry's engines were unable to continue operating and the ship was floating between the Baltic Sea waiting for help, according to Tass.

Earlier, a Lithuanian air force spokesman confirmed the force had dispatched a helicopter to the scene of the accident. The Lithuanian Air Force also ordered two helicopters to be ready for rescue, if necessary, according to Reuters.

Russian media reported that an explosion occurred in the engine room, when the ferry was on its way from Kiel to Klaipeda, Lithuania.

The ferry location is currently in international waters, about 135 km from Kaliningrad, according to RT.

The Russian government has mobilized forces in coordination with the Lithuanian military to launch a rescue operation.

The ferry crashed was the Regina Seaways of DFDS Seaways, based in Denmark. On the ship carrying 335 people, including 298 passengers and 37 crew members.
